Do bugs migrate too?

There are flying creatures everywhere. In the spring and summer months, billions fly above our heads. Some travel far; some travel high. And some, like the ladybug, will land in the spaces we inhabit. Happy Summer.

The efficiency of reading

book
book
NPR’s Lynn Sydell reports that Dr. Jakob Nielsen, a product usability specialist, asked 24 individuals to read a collection of Hemingway stories  in traditional and non-traditional ways (”Reading A Book On An iPad Or Kindle? It Might Take Longer”). His small scale study indicates that the group took more time to read on an iPad (6.2% longer) and Kindle (10.7% longer) than they did with printed text. However, there was no significant difference in reading comprehension.

The reasons for the lengthier read time are not clear, but Nielsen points to readers’ feedback that the iPad was too heavy and the Kindle’s gray-on-gray lettering a bit hard on the eyes.

For traditionalists, this quick study confirms that the experience of a good read is sensory. Turning the page on a bound book feels much different than watching the virtual page curl (albeit beautiful). This is good news for everyone — the printed book and its electronic version will thrive, as long as everyone keeps reading.

How strange are these homes?

snail house
snail house
MSN.com posted a video on “Top 10 Weird Houses,” showing homes built out of materials like glass bottles and porcelain and created into an array of shapes. There’s even a home shaped like a toilet!

The video clip is a testament to the fact that homes are subjectively built, subjectively designed. View the clip at www.realestate.msn.com/video.

Whether individuals choose to live in a cave, a mobile mini, or an upside-down house, to each her own casa!

A geek with a mission

science boy

NPR’s Dustin Dwyer spotlights a nonprofit in the Midwest with interesting beginnings. The article “Geek’s Dream Lab Could Create Jobs In Michigan” introduces us to Chris Boden, who couldn’t afford to enroll in college but followed his passion for learning anyway. He created The Geek Group, “a consortium of people devoted to good old-fashioned scientific and technical experimentation.”

The Geek Group, boasting a world-wide membership, is headquartered in an old machine shop north of Kalamazoo, MI. What started out as a place for making and running experiments has evolved into a nonprofit that serves as a research-and-development facility for firms that cannot afford to run their own labs.

Boden wants to expand The Geek Group by building a 40-acre campus used for “open source” research and development. What Boden needs is investors. And, according to Dwyer, Michigan is “a place that could use some real geeks.”

What is the state of Your Union?

Vegetable man on dish

Every year around the end of January, the State of the Union address is given by the President of the United States to members of Congress. The President reflects on the current health of the nation and places legislative priorities on the congressional plate. While the Constitution doesn’t require the address to be delivered in speech form, virtually every President since Woodrow Wilson has done so.

How is the state of the union in your company, your team, your family? Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action. (Peter Drucker)

Whether we lead a corporation of thousands, a team of hundreds, a family of several, or a person of one, let’s take a cue from our nation’s capitol –  reflect and act in order to fulfill this year’s priorities, keeping in mind that time is of the essence.

In honor of MLK

The singer will.i.am produced the song, ‘Yes We Can,” during the 2008 presidential campaign. This video is shared today not to support one president or political perspective over another but rather to honor the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr., who believed that we can journey as far as our minds imagine.

In light of global events and the suffering in Haiti, the words “yes we can” have transcended the category of slogan. “YES WE CAN” is an affirmation of who we are, a people capable of taking part in change, in healing, in transformation at whatever level and place we choose.

On my list of places to visit…there are the countries Italy, Scotland, Ireland, Spain, Japan. There are the cities Rome, Florence, Shanghai, NYC, Seoul, Prague. And the places where the food is stellar not just because restaurant critics applaud but because regular people rave.

Paris was never on the destination list. That is, until today when I viewed Ina Garten making herbed-baked eggs, provencale style. Usually when I watch a Barefoot Contessa episode I get a little Jeffrey envy. Here’s a man who goes to work each day and drives home anticipating a king’s supper of a three-course meal prepared especially for him. That would be a dream come true.

Anyway, check out the recipe and the Parisian experience that inspired it. Ina and J. are supping at Cafe de Flore in Paris. She orders two ham and cheese omelettes cooked to perfection accompanied by champagne. Does it get better than that?
