So my wife and I decided to join the local YMCA for our family. When my mother-in-law found out about this, she was very excited because not only did she get a month of free membership for referring us, she now had some exercise partners as well!

Okay, so the thought of doing early morning water aerobics with my mother-in-law didn’t exactly excite me, but sure enough at 6 am this morning, there she was. In fact, she’s at the gym every single morning at 6 a.m. sharp! I realized that this morning ritual of hers isn’t inspired by the typical motivating factors most of us need to go to the gym (lose weight, look good, etc). As a first generation immigrant to the United States, my mother-in-law worked for over 30 years (graveyard shift) on a GM assembly line in Detroit. My parents still work 7 days a week in the restaurant business. My personal experience with so many 1st generation immigrants is that there is a stronger internal DRIVE than the average person. Whereas so many of us demand an abundance of external motivation to get something done, there are those who simply know that there is no alternative, BUT to get it done.

So the next time you encounter a first generation immigrant (maybe a restaurant owner, your dry cleaners, or at the 6am water-aerobics class at the Y), try to observe some of that DRIVE I’m talking about. Some of it just might rub off on you.

Obviously as a coach and trainer, I’m a huge fan and proponent of written goals, road maps, assessment tools, and progress reports. Over the years I’ve referenced many times a ’study’ that both Zig Ziglar as well as Tony Robbins have used regarding a study at Yale (according to Robbins) and Harvard (according to Ziglar) regarding how the financial worth of 3% of graduates who had clear written goals were greater than the combined 97% of graduates who did NOT have written goals.

Well, turns out this study is an urban legend according to multiple sources I just found in a google search. I did however find an article supporting goal setting conducted at Dominican University. Okay, maybe at some point we’ll discover that even this study is bogus, but if someone is going to go to the trouble of writing a fictional article about the credibility of a fictional study, more power to them! Here’s the article: Goal Setting pdf.

The study done by Domincan University shows that people with written goals and progress reports didn’t have a ridiculous advantage over those who didn’t, but rather, that they had a Slight Edge . And according to Slight Edge Theory, it’s this small advantage accumulated over time that makes all the difference in our health, wealth, relationships, and significance. So in my opinion, the Dominican survey is more POWERFUL than the Yale/Harvard story. Begin your 2nd half of the year with some written goals. Finish your year with a slight edge !

Do you use a navigation system? If you have one or have ever seen one in action, you know that even when you’re in unfamiliar surroundings you have a certain level of confidence that you would otherwise not have. There’s a roadmap that shows you how far you are to your destination. There’s even a great voice (I like the British female voice option personally) that lets you know when you’re almost there and finally, that you’ve arrived!

It’s important not only to have a roadmap in your car, but one for your business and even life! Find the link under my “864 Resources” called the “F5 Refresh Worksheet.” It’s a great roadmap to help you and your business to your destination!

As the highly anticipated US Open begins tomorrow, let’s consider four common swing types that apply to business:

1. The Uncertain Swing ~ Results are almost always bad. There is lack of clarity and vision. The player has not made a clear decision as to which direction he/she wants to go.

2. The Confident Swing ~ Results are consistenly good. There is a well envisioned path and a smooth execution follows.

3. The Aggressive Swing ~ Classic Risk/Reward scenario. Sometimes the opportunity is too good to pass up and it’s worth the risk. Other times, the player will determine that the consequences are too costly. The better play may be to lay-up for now.

4. The Out-of-Control Swing ~ Results are obvious. Swearing usually involved. Conducted by amateur players only. True Professionals know how to balance between Swings 2 and 3.

So, how’s your game these days? Maybe it’s time to hire a swing coach.
